Jessica Alderete

Supervisor, Fiscal Services

Jessica Alderete is a Supervisor of Fiscal Services for UNM’s Main Campus Contract and Grant Accounting Department. She received her BBA in Accounting at the University of New Mexico. After receiving her BBA she worked for a CPA firm for 2 ½ years conducting audits, preparing taxes and handling book keeping for various agencies. She first began working in the Contract and Grant Accounting Office as an Accountant II in January of 2011 and was later promoted to an Accountant III in November of 2011. She has over 8 ½ years of experience working with Contract and Grants both at UNM and CNM.

Cecilia Brooke Cholka, MA, CIP

Human Protection Specialist, Office of Institutional Review Board (OIRB)

Cecilia Brooke Cholka, MA, CIP is the Human Protections Specialist for UNM’s IRB and started the OIRB when it opened on Main Campus in 2013. She has over a decade of experience with human subjects research (HSR) and works to make the UNM IRB experience collaborative with researchers. She develops training and education for Main and Branch Campus researchers who engage in HSR, with a special focus on student researchers and first time submitters. Together with Linda Petree, she created the SBER Network, an international community for social, behavioral, and educational research IRBs.

Monica Fishel

Faculty Research Support Officer, Faculty Research Development

Monica Fishel has been with the University of New Mexico since 2000. For the past 17 years, she has specialized in supporting research development. She began her UNM career at the Center for High Technology Materials. After seven years, she took a position with the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and is currently with the Faculty Research Development Office (FRDO) which is part of the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR). In her current position, she works in close collaboration with other units of the OVPR and with research administration personnel in colleges, centers and departments to provide a broad range of services to faculty in support of obtaining extramural funding.

Rosa Gonzalez-Rosenblatt

Director, Office of Sponsored Projects

Rosa has worked in Research Administration at UNM for the last 18 years. Her experience includes all aspects of research administration and various levels of responsibility, from working as an accountant at the department level; a contract and grant administrator in the Office of Sponsored Projects; an accountant in Contract & Grant Accounting to now being the Director of the Office of Sponsored Projects.  Rosa holds a Bachelor’s Degree with a dual concentration in Accounting and International Business. She also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Robert O. Anderson School of Management at UNM.

Danielle Gurule

Accountant 3, Fiscal Services

Danielle Gurule is an Accountant 2 for Contract and Grant Accounting at the University of New Mexico. She received her BBA in Finance at the University of New Mexico. Her experience with contract and grants began in 2015 as an Accountant 1 at UNM Contract and Grant Accounting office. She was responsible for reviewing and approving DPI/DPEZ reimbursements and continues to work with reimbursements in Chrome River. She assisted with Chrome River testing and trained new personnel in the Contract and Grant Office on travel policies and Chrome River approval processes.

Jeremy Hamlin

Manager, Fiscal Services

Jeremy Hamlin is the new Manager for Main Campus Contract and Grant Accounting at the University of New Mexico. He graduated summa cum laude from the Anderson School of Management, with his BBA in Accounting, and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Before becoming Manager of Contract and Grant Accounting, Jeremy was a Supervisor in the department for two and a half years. Prior to coming to UNM, he spent eight years in public accounting, specializing in governmental audits and single audits. His audit experience from the perspective of both an auditor and auditee has solidified his understanding and knowledge of federal compliance requirements.

Teresa Hammitt

Senior, Fiscal Services Accountant, Fiscal Services

Teresa Hammitt is a Senior Financial Services Accountant for UNM’s Main Campus Contract and Grant Accounting Department. She graduated summa cum laude from Anderson School of Management. Teresa worked for over twenty years in public and private accounting before joining UNM as a staff member. She also has experience in financial analysis and process improvement. She has been working at UNM in the Contract and Grant Accounting department since March, 2014.

Deb Kuidis

Industrial Security Officer, Office of the Provost

Deborah Kuidis is the Facility Security Office for The University of New Mexico (UNM) where she monitors U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) contracts as well as Export Controlled contracts tied to UNM activities/personnel. Deborah previously served as Commander with the UNM Police Department for 4 and a half years and Deputy Chief with the Albuquerque Police Department for 20 years. Ms. Kuidis graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1996. Her expertise and efforts in security gained recognition from the U.S. DoD as she received the DoD Cogswell and Counterintelligence Awards on behalf of UNM.

Anne Lightsey

Ombuds Facilitator

Anne feels very fortunate to be a part of the UNM Ombuds Services for Staff team.  Every day she sees staff come in with a _______ (problem, question, conflict), and they leave with their goals identified and prioritized and with a game plan for how to create a more collaborative and productive workplace. Staff take advantage of Ombuds Services, whether their concern is a new one or a persistent one, because they understand that workplace conflict is inevitable, and it need not be an ongoing burden.
Ombuds Services for Staff supports employees’ effort to reduce the human and organizational costs of conflict by offering staff a confidential place to vent and explore options. Omubuds’ mission is to promote a culture of constructive conflict management at UNM.

Frances Marin

Senior Fiscal Services Accountant, Fiscal Services

Frances Marin is a Senior Financial Services Accountant for Contract and Grant Accounting at the University of New Mexico. She received her BBA in Accounting at University of New Mexico, and her Master of Accountancy at New Mexico State University. Her experience in monitoring contract and grants for higher education began in 2006, under NMSU Office of Sponsored Projects Accounting, followed by the position of Senior Staff Accountant in charge of federal grants and contracts for Claremont Colleges in California, and currently as a monitor of sponsored funds for UNM. Additional experience includes the position of Financial Analyst in private industry, Internal Auditor for NMSU, and ten years working for the Internal Revenue Service, as a taxpayer specialist and office auditor.

Sue Marker

Compliance Assistance, Research Compliance

Sue, a Compliance Specialist with the Office of Research & Compliance, started at UNM in November 2016.  Prior to that, she was associated with California State University, Monterey Bay working in the Masters of Social Work Program and in the Admissions office.  She worked several years as a Compliance Examiner with the NE Workers’ Compensation Court.

Isela Roeder

Faculty Research Support Officer, School of Engineering

Isela has been working at UNM since 1997 after receiving her Bachelor’s degree from UNM and has been serving in a Research Administration capacity for 19 of the last 20 years. She has worked with UNM faculty to support their research while helping them navigate the ever-changing University systems. She was the Program Manager for the Center for Biomedical Engineering from their inception in 2005 until late 2014 where she worked with faculty from proposal development to project closeout. She worked at the Office of Sponsored Projects as the Manager in 2014 before returning to the School of Engineering in April of 2016.

Chris Saxton

Manager, Office of Sponsored Projects

Chris has worked in a variety of roles in Research Administration in higher education over the past 15 years that include serving as the Director of Resource Development and Grants Administration at Lone Star College in Tomball Texas, a Research Administrator for the University of Kentucky, and a Contract and Grants Administrator for the Department of Psychiatry at UNM HSC. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Educational Leadership and Administration at New Mexico State University and serves as the Manager of the Office of Sponsored Projects for the University of New Mexico’s Main Campus.

Rebecca Valdez

Supervisor, Fiscal Services, Office of Sponsored Projects

Rebecca joined UNM in 2012 and has experience in both, pre and post award functions at the University.  She started at UNM as an accountant in Contract and Grant accounting, and is now a Supervisor-Fiscal Services in the Office of Sponsored Projects, managing the Award Team.  Prior to joining UNM she worked in the private sector  for 13 years where she gained private sector accounting experience in the government contracting field- as a fixed asset accountant, construction field- as a staff accountant, and as a staff accountant in a local CPA Firm. Rebecca holds a Bachelor’s Degree with concentration in Accounting from UNM.

Reed Vawter, MS, RD, LD, CPT

Health Education Consultant

Reed is a registered dietitian and health educator with UNM Employee Health Promotion. He specializes in helping UNM faculty and staff to balance their lives through nutrition, fitness, and stress management, with the goal of boosting energy, optimizing health, and maximizing happiness.

Monica Waquie

Sponsored Projects Officer Office of Sponsored Projects

Monica joined UNM in 2014 where she started as a Contract and Grant Administrator then moved up to a Sponsored Projects Officer and is now a Supervisor in the Office of Sponsored Projects, managing the Contract Team. Prior to joining UNM she worked for a Federal contracting agency as a Contract Specialist for 10 years where she gained contracting experience with government contracts- such as Cost Reimbursable, Firm Fixed Price, Time and Materials, Indefinite- Delivery to name a few. Monica holds a Bachelor’s Degree with concentration in Accounting.

Alana Watts

Senior Fiscal Services Accountant

Alana Watts is a University of New Mexico Alumni, having earned both her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s in Business Administration at UNM. She has served as a University accountant for almost nine years. The first six years of her tenure at UNM was with HSC Unrestricted Accounting and is currently a Senior Financial Services Accountant at Contract and Grants-Main. Her experience from working in core offices conveys a solid understanding of UNM Administrative Policy and processes as well as compliance with State and Federal Guidelines.

Timothy Wester

Contract & Grant Administrator, Office of Sponsored Projects

Tim is a Contracts and Grants Administrator in the Office of Sponsored Projects. Tim has been with the University of New Mexico for eight years providing central-office level proposal and award review ensuring completeness and accuracy. He has developed and prepared university training material and taught training classes to the university community on budget development, and best practices for proposal preparation. Tim is a New Mexico Small Business Owner and pilots unmanned aerial vehicles. Originally from the Seattle area, Tim came to New Mexico with the United States Airforce and has raised his family here with his wife of 25 years. He has two daughters who currently attend UNM, with a third on her way. His son and wife are expecting their first child in January, making Tim, Grandpa Tim!
